Philip K. Howard is the former Vice-Chair at Covington & Burling LLP (now Senior Counsel), and a noted authority on the effects of modern law and bureaucracy on government and society. As a lawyer, Howard has represented business leaders in a wide range of challenges, including governance, acquisitions, and regulatory disputes, and is consistently ranked as one of America’s “Best Lawyers.” Howard is also the author of bestselling The Death of Common Sense, and most recently, The Rule of Nobody, which has been nominated for the Friedrich Hayek Prize. He writes regularly for the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and other publications, and his TED talk has been viewed over half a million times. He advises leaders of both parties on regulatory reform, and his writings have been cited this year by both Hillary Clinton and Republican candidates for president. He is founder and Chair of Common Good, a non-partisan government reform organization. The Advisory Board of Common Good is a “who’s who” of America’s leading citizens, including former Senators Bill Bradley and Alan Simpson. They recently launched a social media campaign,“Who’s in Charge Around Here?”, advocating radical simplification of regulatory structures. Howard has served on corporate boards of the New England Life Insurance Company and Squaw Valley Development Corp., and is joining the board of a home healthcare company owned by the private equity firm One Equity Partners. Howard and his wife Alexandra live in Manhattan and have four children. He enjoys golf (Shinnecock), music, analog photography, and family.
